Falling down handphone. Why is it broken falling from high story building even though the force is the same.

A student ask me today, about the effect of distance to the force of an object falling down. In this case it's a about a hand phone, falling down. The question is wouldn't the force be the same, if it's 1 story vs 10 story building? But why if it's higher it will break?

I search for force vs momentum and I found out this web page. Nice explanation by 3 physics instructor of some sorts. How is force related to momentum?

or the link http://www.physlink.com/Education/AskExperts/ae462.cfm

The answer for my student question is that when the handphoen meet the floor at a very short time, the force will be very high due to the short time that the handphoen stopped. If it's a soft surface the handphone will have more time, so the force will be much lower.

Here is the most related answer.

Newton's 2nd Law tells us that force = mass x acceleration ( F = ma ).
Since acceleration is just how velocity changes over time, we can write
this as

F = m * v/t

Multiply both sides by time to arrive at

F t = m v

Since mv is momentum, we can see that the momentum conferred to an
object by a force equals the force times the time the force is applied.
Thus if a 15 Newton force to the right is applied to an initially
stationary object for 3 seconds, it will have a momentum of 45 kg m/s
to the right.

Most students who ask this question are usually trying to
figure out the reverse situation, however. If an object hits me with a
certain amount of momentum, how much force does it hit me with? Note
that due to Newton's 3rd Law, this can be calculated the same way. If a
thrown egg hits your hand with a momentum of 5 kg m/s, the force it
applies to your hand depends on the time it takes for your hand to
absorb the momentum. If you hold your hand very stiffly (and try to
make the egg stop in a very short period of time) the ball exerts a
high force on your hand, e.g. 100 N for 1/20th of a second. However as
anyone who has ever played in an egg toss knows, if you let your hand
'give' and extend the amount of time it takes to absorb the momentum,
the egg exerts a smaller force on your hand, e.g. 10 N for 1/2 a
second.

This was taken ten years ago today....

Why?

Do you have brains?
Do you use your brain?
How frequent do you use it?
Do you love to think?
Are you a doer or a thinker?

What makes us better than animals is when we use our brain to think. What do we think about? There's plenty of that. If you're a student you might be thinking about passing an exam. If you are a lecturer you might be thinking on how to make the most of your students to boost your career.

If you’re an employee you might be thinking about bonus and if you are the boss of the company you might be thinking on how not to give too much bonus or excuses on giving less or not giving at all any bonus.

So, Take a few minutes to stop for a while and try to use your tiny little brain to think about what you have done and what you have not done yet. About what you already have and what you want or dreamt of? Forget about other people for a moment and focus at yourself; is this what you really want?

The Death of Internet Marketing- The changing times, and YOU must know it.

Hi Again...

Zulkef here..

I will admit, like you may be feeling now, that I thought it was some hyped up offer to get me to join for free and get some offer...

...Turns out I was wrong. Way wrong.

The bottom line is, this report really opened my eyes to what really is the death of Internet marketing. The good news is, the report also shows you what you need to know to succeed in the near future.

The times are changing and I it would be a shame for anyone to not read this report and fail like many will.

I read it, and I wanted to share it with you ASAP.

I recommend you take a break from what ever it is you are doing if you can and get access to this report now.

Consider your future success by going here now...

Kalpakjian's book "Manufacturing Engineering & Technology"

I manage to download the solution for Kalpakjian’s book and also their slides for the big text. I think it’s a good effort by Edward Pang, maybe the author from Malaysia who did a SI conversion for Kalpakjian’s book. Kalpakjian’s manufacturing book is pretty much too bulky, with many references to other pages or chapters or even outside references. This make it quite not user friendly for beginners. Maybe ok for intermediate or expert user. The slides pretty much sum up most of the thick book, in point form. I have read through the book before and the slides are good. Trying to teach without the slides is a big task. The slides are really a good help. You can get this if you are instructor of the course where you buy a big amount for your students. I manage to help sold about 60 copies. This book can be used in two subjects at least and it’s good for all time reference.

NGV Community Forum - to save on petrol

NGV Community Forum

There's a section for newbies & advanced users. Our Friend Hadzley have been using it for 1 month ++, and he was extremely satisfied with the mileage. However there's a problem with pick-up. He use 1.6 Ford, and he hardly overtake a lorry on teh highway. But as you know lorry in Malaysia has the same speed limit like any othe rvehicles, and they drive pretty fast too.

You can check out the forum & learn more. I'm thinking of adding NGV to my old (but still beautiful..ehem) Saga 1.5.

About toilet - How it reflects human civilsation

Utusan Malaysia Online - Dalam Negeri

Our Government is goint to spend a lot of money on making sure that our toilet is clean, fresh, and smells good.

Maybe they should opt for one of this:
1. For women, standing up & dicreet, disposable & non-disposable http://www.treehugger.com/files/2005/09/peeing_in_your.php
2. Or this one. Sure a cheap substitute from the air-conditioned mobile unit mentioned yesterday on The Star. But only for men I guess. But with the above device Women can also use it. http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/AboutLambeth/BrixtonToilets.htm
